A webinar on Packaging stewardship – global and local lessons.
Globally, action to date to address the environmental and human health impacts of packaging has largely focused on managing waste at the end-of-life. This is starting to change, with more product stewardship schemes and regulations around the globe broadening their focus and investing in actions that:
- design-out unnecessary packaging
- reduce the amount of packaging produced
- increase packaging reuse
- increase the use of recycled content in new packaging
During this webinar, the Centre released its latest white paper, Global Scan of Packaging Stewardship Schemes – Lessons for Australia. Authored by industry experts Dr Helen Lewis, Associate Professor Nick Florin, Rose Read and Kapil Kulkarni, this paper is a comprehensive review of packaging stewardship schemes worldwide. Drawing on extensive research and real-world insights, it features valuable lessons and recommendations for Australia’s packaging industry.
The webinar:
- Explored characteristics of packaging stewardship schemes across Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand.
- Outlined the opportunities to enhance the effectiveness and impact of national packaging regulations in Australia.
- Discussed when and where financial incentives and eco-modulation effectively drive positive systemic changes to business and consumer behaviours that are environmentally and socially regenerative.
